This documents aim is to help you understand and select the specification you need.

Processors (CPUs)

The Central Processing Unit (CPU), otherwise known as the processor, is the ‘brain’ of your computer. It processes all the commands and calculations your computer’s operating system tells it to.

• i3 CPUs provide adequate performance for tasks such as web browsing, online meetings (zoom, teams etc), office work, watching/streaming HD videos online.
• i5 CPUs provide higher performance for the tasks listed above, as well as adequate performance for more demanding tasks (For example, photo-editing*)

RAM

RAM (Random Access Memory) holds data the computer can access quickly without having to read from the hard drive first.

When the operating system (Windows 10 or 11) and programs (‘applications’, apps’ or ‘tasks’) are running, they occupy the RAM. RAM is measured in gigabytes (GB) and the more of it a computer has, the more tasks can be run at once, helping the computer run more efficiently. Some programs require more RAM than others and will not run or will perform very poorly if you do not have enough free RAM to run them.

For carrying out basic tasks such as web browsing and office work, 4GB of RAM is usually adequate. For more heavy-duty tasks or running many programs at once, you may want to upgrade to 8GB.

Storage

Storage is where your computer’s files and programs live. It is where your documents, pictures, music and video files are kept. As with RAM, capacity is measured in gigabytes (GB). Your files remain intact in storage even when power is off. The more GBs you have, the more files you can store. The types of storage medium available are Solid-State Drive (SSD) and the storage amount available are 120GB or 256GB.

SSDs are newer technology. They are much faster at accessing data than the old hard disc drives. A computer that boots from an SSD loads into Windows much faster than it would if that same computer had a regular hard drive.

Operating System

The operating system is the software environment a computer will load into when it is turned on. It allows the user to operate their computer in a visually stimulating and easy-to-understand manner.
