The Opportunity: Enhancing Data Sanitisation for Network Devices
While our existing processes were strong, the growing complexity and volume of networking equipment presented an opportunity to further enhance how we sanitise these devices and dispose of vulnerable data.
Networking devices like switches, routers, and firewalls often require specialised handling due to the way data is stored across different components. As demand increased, we identified an opportunity with NovaFox to introduce a more scalable and standardised approach that would further strengthen data security of Networking devices, improve audit trail consistency, and enhance operational efficiency.
The Solution: Integrating NovaFox Hydra for Secure Sanitisation
Our collaboration with NovaFox introduced Hydra into our workflow, enhancing how we achieve secure sanitisation and data erasure across complex Network devices
Hydra provides a structured and repeatable approach to data sanitisation, enabling us to standardise processes across networking devices in the same way we already do for other IT assets, and aligns with recognised data sanitisation frameworks, including:
- NIST SP 800-88 Rev.2 methodologies
- R2v3 logical sanitisation expectations
By integrating Hydra, we have enhanced how we carry out the process of deliberately and securely removing or destroying the data stored on Networking devices.
Improving Efficiency While Maintaining Security
Another important outcome has been improved operational efficiency.
By introducing a more structured platform for handling networking equipment, we have streamlined how networking devices are processed without compromising on security measures. This allows us to manage larger volumes of data bearing network devices while maintaining the same high standards of data sanitisation.
The result is a more scalable service that supports clients with faster turnaround times on the certificates of data destruction and reporting of networking devices, while still ensuring that all that data is destroyed to recognised standards, confirmed via independent certification.
Supporting Secure Disposal, Reuse, and Recycling
Effective data sanitisation is essential for enabling safe reuse and responsible recycling.
Once data has been securely removed, devices can be re-used and reintroduced into the supply chain for revenue generation, or where reuse is not appropriate or data erasure is unsuccessful, we carry out physical destruction to 6mm shred size before recycling, to ensure that devices are destroyed and render data permanently unrecoverable and the shredded material is recycled through environmentally responsible recycling channels, for precious metals to be recovered.
